Technics M85 MK2 Professional Grade 

19" Rack Mount, Broadcast Quality Cassette Deck

A Rare Find For A Nice Operating True Professional Grade Cassette Deck!

Now you have a special opportunity to purchase this most rare and highly collectable Technics M85 Mk2 19" Rack Mount Professional Broadcast Grade Cassette Deck at most acquirable price level. This was most preferred as the industry standard for professional audio purposes in a cassette deck for many high end audio applications and was also designed to complement and match the Now Legendary Technics SL1200MKII Industry Standard Turntables as well. Of course this particular unit has been used along side not only Sl1200 MkII but also the 1400 Mk2 as well as 1800 Mk2's. 

This particular unit has been used in both an advertising production studio, pro-sound light touring needs and in some nightclub service as well. It has seen a fair amount of professional service in its time but there still seems to be plenty of life left in the most vintage audio must have piece for the true analog quality audio connoisseur. This unit has shown itself to be worthy of almost any audio application for cassette tapes you might ever need it for.

One of the most unique characteristics about this professional grade cassette deck was the use of a direct drive motor versus a belt drive motor on the capstan for super precise regulated tape speed. This unit also offers a second and separate motor for tape winding functions so these in no way load or impair the primary motor in its performance. The hardened perm-alloy heads seem to be in great shape with no visible wear as you can see in the picture below. Seller does not believe these are the original heads but it is unknown for sure on this question. I do know it was performing well when it was finally removed from service when a building was sold where it was installed. You can also see the pinch roller appears clean as this was regularly maintained while in service for the highest level of dependability.

This unit has been sitting for many years and it while it appears to be fully functioning. This seller would recommend to go through the inside and have controls cleaned just based on the age of the machine. I no longer have a way to fully test this unit as I no longer have a sound system setup to hook it up to. My inspection was limited to putting in a tape and testing the winding functions which appeared to be fine and seeing audio on the VU or DB meters and I am showing it to you playing so you know it was working for me on my own brief inspection. You can see in the picture below it is playing by signal present on the meters.

Many have requested a closer look at the record play head as the original and the of the pinch roller wear so I have accommodated in this next picture.

As far as I know the head is original and as indicated in the picture above. It appears the head is undisturbed as in no one has been adjusting on it as it looks like the red glue that holds the alignment screws is un-disturbed and in-tact.

The transport is full computer logic, true solenoid operation for the smoothest and most gentle tape handling. Of course this unit has full adjustable and selectable bias controls with full noise reduction capabilities. It offers about every feature you would expect in a full professional grade audio component of this level. In noting deficiencies, seller will share that one side of the metal case does have surface rust on it and I am showing it to you in this picture as I like to point out deficiencies where I find them in being hones. The unit is dirty from sitting and could definitely use some cleanup. I am just sharing what I am finding again as I try and give an overall assessment of any items when I list them for sale. Here is the rusted side panel whcih not really be visible if the unit is installed in either a professional rack or a home entertainment center as it is only on the one side of the cassette.

It looks worse than it is in the picture but again. I am just being honest in sharing this one negative fact that has come to my attention in the inspection of this machine. It has been stored in several properties or warehouses over the years in selling properties and be apparently some are more damp and moist than others. The face is in very good shape for a vintage unit of this age with the amount of usage this unit has seen. I know in the original installation, the price was almost $800.00 and this is before we take into consideration inflation from the late 70s to early 80s when these were produced. The fluorescent db meter display is adjustable in brightness to match other components or to select a desired brightness level.

If you ever wanted a Nakamichi or other any high end cassette deck. This unit surpassed the performance of any of these I ever had a chance to audition it against from my own test purposes back in the days when these were common to see in high end installations. These are built like  tank in durability and this unit is all steel with a full steel chassis and cabinet.

These were primarily designed for professional usage in pro-sound and broadcast applications with automation needs in mind. The M85 has a remote control connector on the rear of the unit. We used it to synchronize with a commercial timer and control unit when it was used in commercial production. The connector now has tape over it to protect it from any dirt coming into the back and this may be removed if you ever wanted to utilize this remote control socket feature on the back of this unit as we once did now long ago.
