Realistic Moog MG-1 Concertmate Synthesizer Very Rare Vintage Collectable Early Moog Synth. StockWarehouse.cntr.us If you are a serious diehard musician and you want to own a major piece of music history back to the early days of electronic music and early analog synthesizers. This is an absolute must have full size key piano style poly synth. Many low cost synths in this era had miniature keys where these are full sized. This is the original World Famous Moog Mg1 Concertmate produced by Moog Music and marketed by Radio Shack as one of the first affordable music synthesizers. These were a twin oscillator polyphonic synth offering some poly sunth capability as well as the fat twin oscillator sound that made Moog so famous in the first place. This is similar in functionality to the Rogue with the Polyphonic Synthesizer ability included for versatility. This unit is a one owner synthesizer and was purchased new in 1981 and has not been in use for many years. I have loaned it out a few times to those with a historic interest and I believe the time for it has come to go as I am a long way in my life from where this was used. It is in excellent cosmetic condition and has not seen heavy use or abuse. The control panel is in excellent condition with no fading of lettering or markings on the front or rear panel.
As you can see, the cosmetic condition is really excellent for a musical keyboard of this age and vintage. With no cracks, major scratches or cosmetic blemishes. If you want a museum piece. This is it and it is ready to go. These were produced in a very limited quantity as Radio Shack decided they did not want to be in the musical instrument business. The serial number is 1610 and as you can see below, it is handwritten and I remember buying it when these first came out brand new as I bought this about as fast as Radio Shack offered it as I was one who basically grew up in a Radio Shack store. I remember eagerly anticipating the arrival of these as I knew about these long before they actually hit the stores at the time!
You will look long and hard to find a vintage unit with a lower serial number than this Radio Shack Moog Synthesizer and it is indeed a very rare collectable musical instrument that really helped shape much of music recorded today. It was the affordable window into an otherwise cost prohibitive World of Music Synthesis for me growing up.
This unit has been sitting and has been moved around to many different locations I have bought and sold over the years in real estate deals. It has been in some great places and and some not so great places while it has been stored over the years. Upon first powering the unit up. The controls were very sticky, dirty and noisy and really unusable. I asked a retired tech friend to spend a little time with it and see what he could do with it. His recommendation is replacement of many of the controls or at least some real time spent with a good grade of contact cleaner to go through and perhaps bring out the best in the controls as they are. The unit is functional and I detected eratic operation with several of the controls but it will work again and I will let you hear it in a moment. The tone source tuning control was very unstable as it wanted to keep drifting on tuning. Most of these problems I know are basically just related to dirty controls and the unit being stored in an often times damp warehouse dirty conditions and not being used for so long. There is only 1 light or LED on the unit and this is to indicate the selected modulation speed. It works fine too and you can see it on in this picture as shown below.
With a little attention and caring and after finding this unit sitting for so many years and powering up and playing it. I realize there is a lot of life left in this MG-1 and there are clearly a whole new generation of musicians who really appreciate the unique nature of this obviously rare, valuable and most feature packed instrument. Radio Shack quickly opted out of this joint venture with Moog because of very little to almost no interest from the consumer public when these were originally produced. From the Radio Shack perspective, I know they considered it one of their worst investments. Hundreds of thousands of quality minded musicians and electronic music enthusiast considered this one of their best. Overall the unit does work and all keys play fine.
Now for the fun part. Being an older guy who has not really played with this stuff in some time. I talked with my retired technician freind and we joked and decided that the best way to show you a little more about the sounds of this vintage synthesizer was to just let you hear it for yourself! (Now you can start getting worried) I am about to give you probably one of the best reasons to buy this vintage Radio Shack Mg-1 and that is to get these two old guys out of the music business who should no longer be producing any kind of music whatsoever!
